Impact

International sanctions, diplomatic tensions, evidence of high-level corruption

In 2023, the US Treasury Department sanctioned Antal Rogán, Minister leading the Prime Minister's Cabinet Office and one of Viktor Orbán's closest associates, for corruption.

Rogán oversees government communication and propaganda, as well as intelligence services. The sanctions cited serious allegations of corruption, bribery, and abuse of power, including alleged misuse of EU funds and connections with Russia's Gazprom.

This is an extremely rare step against a NATO ally's government member. Rogán denied the charges, calling them 'politically motivated.' The sanctions showed that even the closest Orbán circles are not immune to international accountability.
